Demerol, also known as pethidine or meperidine, is a quick responding opiate analgesic drug taken to relieve moderate to severe pain. The Food and Drug Administration labeled Demerol as a Category C for safety in pregnancy. Category C means that risk cannot be ruled out and that further testing in humans needs to take place through adequate, well-controlled studies. The FDA warns that there is a chance of harm to the fetus if this drug is used during pregnancy. Using Demerol for long periods of time or in high doses near the delivery date is not recommended due to potential harm to your unborn child. However, the benefits of Demerol as a pain medication may outweigh the risks and you should consult with your physician. It is also warned that Demerol can be passed through breast milk during nursing and may have undesirable effects on your child. Updated: 04.16.21
