Morphine, a highly potent opiate analgesic drug taken to relieve pain, is labeled by the Food and Drug Administration as a Category C for safety in pregnancy. Category C means that risk cannot be ruled out and that further testing in humans needs to take place through adequate, well-controlled studies. The FDA warns that there is a chance of harm to the fetus if this drug is used during pregnancy. Using morphine for long periods of time or in high doses near the delivery date is not recommended due to potential harm to your unborn child. However, potential benefits of morphine as a pain medication may outweigh the risks and you should consult with your physician. Updated: 04.17.21
